Focus on Positive Reinforcement, Not Punishment
A little praise goes a long way in motivating employees. As a supervisor, it's important to praise employees for their hard work and dedication. Punishing or demeaning employees will only backfire, as it creates a negative company culture that directly correlates to decreased worker satisfaction and increased turnover rates. Focus on positive reinforcement when communicating with employees to promote a positive company culture and workplace.
Ask for Feedback
Part of being a good supervisor is having the ability to listen to what your employees or subordinates have to say. Unfortunately, many supervisors only know how to create one-way dialog with their employees. They delegate tasks to employees without requesting their input. Effective communication requires two-way dialog. You should both talk and listen to your employees to identify concerns and issues that could snowball into bigger problems.
Recognize Employees for Their Efforts
Failure to recognize employees is a common mistake made by supervisors. According to a recent survey, more than half (58%) of employees said they don't receive enough recognition from their supervisors. Some studies have even shown that employees prefer recognition from their superiors over higher pay. So, how exactly do you recognize employees? There are dozens of ways to implement employee recognition in your company, one of which is to create an employee-of-the-month program. Each month, you can choose a hardworking employee to recognize and reward with a gift. Another idea is to send personalized thank-you notes to employees. Either way, ensure that you are recognizing employees in order to keep morale and productivity at a high level.
Create a Safe Working Environment
While most supervisory duties involve communicating with employees, another important duty that shouldn't be overlooked is creating a safe working environment. Whether it's a hotel, restaurant, retail store, or any other business, supervisors and managers are required to provide employees with a safe environment in which to work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), roughly 3 million Americans are injured each year while on the job. Conduct regular injury risk assessments within your workplace to find and fix potential hazards.
As you can see, there are many reasons why it's important to learn effective supervisory skills. Not only will you be in a better position to lead others, the workers under your direction will be much more productive, efficient, and happy to perform their jobs. It's a win-win situation.
